For a piece to be legally classified as gold vermeil in many countries, including the U.S., it must meet these non-negotiable requirements:

Base Metal: Must be 925 sterling silver; it cannot be made of brass, copper, or other cheaper base metals.
Gold Thickness: The gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick, which is significantly more substantial than the 0.5 microns or less often found in standard gold plating.
Gold Purity: The gold used for the plating must be at least 10 karats or higher.
